!)Rumbling Stomach by Kavevangua Kahengua
The mood flies high
Like quelea birds
Soldiers march down
Independence Avenue
It's March twenty-first
Thuds come faintly to my ears
As if I were deaf
The mood flies high
The day is dull
A wintry halo
Surrounds my body
As I wave down passing cars

With my hungry hand
From vantage point
Where great names meet
You name them:
Corner of Robert Mugabe
And Sam Nujoma
Corner of Laurent Kabila
And Nelson Mandela
Corner of Hage Geingob
And Julius Kambarage Nyerere
Eyes shy like those of trapped hyena
Peep at me
Yes, trapped in their wealth
Perhaps some day some job will come my way
Isn't being positive
A fantasy
Have you ever missed your breath
The mood flies high
Fireworks rock the night
Like colonial gun motors
From underneath the bridge
Inside my empty stomach
Air rumbles like a thunderstorm
Perhaps I should turn over a new leaf
Turn to rape
To push the days of the week
And fill the vacuum.
2)Africa Day by Dr Hugh Ellis
Shabby-faced dustbin man knocks at my door
Inside I'm buried with work and cold
And wearing my African scarf
We won the war
But have we won the peace?
He said: 'Sir I'm hungry and kinda cold
They've taken my house away from me
And my children don't go to school
'We won the war
But have we won the peace?
I said: 'Brother I wish I could help you
I spent my final cent helping a friend
Get away from her abusive spouse'
We won the war

But have we won the peace?
He said: 'You whites want me to call you baas'
I said: 'Don't you talk like an idiot-
Can't you see my Africa scarf?'
We won the war
But have we won the peace?
Inside again, I'm feeling totally alone
Now I almost want to strangle myself
Yes, with that African scarf
We won the war
But we've not yet won the peace.
3) My Grandmothers Hat by Dr Anneli Nghikembua
My grandmother's hat
Is my grandmother's shield-
Beautiful when on her grey, white hair
Though torn with thousand holes
That the sun rays make their way through
And fall on her folded dry skin
She never leaves her hat behind
And wherever she goes, she always takes it along
My grandmother sleeps with her hat on,
For it is her delight.
I watch her as she approaches me
From a few distant miles.
She looks as though a wall is about to fall apart,
But yet she smiles,
Her hat nodding each time she takes a step.
One may say the hat my grandmother wears
Is her age.
I love my grandmother-
My grandmother loves her grand hat.
Pay special attention to the following as you write your essay:
a) Brief synopsis of the poem.
b) The message in the poem(theme/themes).
c) Images used in the poem.
