According to Brown and Levinson (1987) politeness can be defined as "showing awareness
and consideration of another person's face " (pp. 311-312). Politeness means to know how
to be nice, tactful, and modest to other people. People, therefore, avoid face threatening acts
with politeness strategies. Linguistic politeness can be defined as the ways in which language
is employed in conversation to show consideration for the feelings and desires of one's
interlocutors to create and uphold interpersonal relationships and to comply with the rules
for what society or one's culture considers appropriate behaviour. The major purpose of
Politeness Principle (PP) according to Leech is to establish and maintain feelings of comity
within social group. In line with Geofrey Leech's Politeness Principles, analyse the
conversation between a medical doctor and a patient below. Write an expository essay.

The patient was a young man named Eben Kalola who was brought to Katutura Hospital
in Windhoek. The patient here fell on a forklift while he was at work. His lower back bones
and muscles were dislocated. He had to be sent to the osteopathic manipulation procedure
to move his displaced bones back to their position. Evaluate the context of the following
medical interaction and write an expository essay following Leech's Politeness Principle.
Nurse: Doctor, there is a man who came with the paramedics in ward 4 waiting for you.
Doctor: Good morning, Nurse (Shaking hands with the Nurse). What has happened? What is
the problem?
Patient: I fell on a forklift at my workplace. I cannot move my back. I have a lot of pain.
Doctor: Can I please examine your back? Do you have a lower back pain?
Patient: Mhhmmmm. (Groaning)
Doctor: I will send you to the X-ray service to determine the extent of the injury.
Patient: Ok Doctor
Two hours later ...
Doctor: The result of your X-ray shows that your disc has shifted. It needs to be moved back
to its original place.
Patient: Are you going to operate me Doctor? I just do not have sufficient money at the
moment.
Doctor: No! No operation required. I will send you for the osteopathic manipulation.
Patient: Is it painful Doctor? Is it expensive? {lowering his voice.]
Doctor: Why are you here if you do not have sufficient funds? {Shouting at him.]
Procedure.
Doctor: The osteopathic manipulation procedure is not usually painful. Osteopathy is a type
of physical manipulation of the body's muscle tissue and bones that will be performed to
move your displaced bones. The osteopath will perform the procedure. When the procedure
is complete, you will come back to me for your medication.
Patient: Ok Doctor.
Doctor: Welcome back. How was the procedure? How are you feeling now?
Patient: I feel fine Doctor. I can even walk. The other Doctor (osteopath) twisted my lower
back and my hip bones with his hands.

Doctor: That was the osteopath. I will now prescribe for you some pain medication to take
when you get home. I will also book you off for one week and advise you to rest. Do not do
any physical work even if you feel like you are strong to work until after 7 days. I will book you
in the hospital ward.
Patient: No! No ! I must be discharged! I have no money left. I am alone here! Please let me
go!
Doctor: I will prescribe for you ibuprofen and naproxen to reduce the lower back pain. For
you to prevent back pain, I advise you to use safe lifting techniques while standing at a correct
posture.
Patient: Is there any other way? I can't stay even for two more days here. I just can't stay
here. [Shouting and groaning at the same time.]
Doctor: I will book you in the hospital ward for 7 days. I need you to heal and rest enough. I
will come to the ward to review your state every morning for 7days. Have a nice day. [The
Doctor banged the door and left hardily.]
