SECTION THREE: WRITING AN ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY
Interaction Analysis ..................................................................................................... [50 Marks]
Due to his extreme pain, the patient in the conversation below demanded an operation. The
doctor spent sufficient time to convince the patient that he does not need any kind of eye
operation at all. However, the patient persisted and was not gratified. Evaluate the context
of the following medical interaction between the medical doctor and the patient and write
an argumentative essay following Geofrey Leech's Politeness Theory.
Ophthalmology- asthenopia (Eye strain)
This patient came to the eye clinic complaining about a condition called asthenopia (eye
strain). It is a condition that is caused by reading or driving for long hours without resting the
eyes. The eyes become strained. He was admitted to the hospital two days ago as his eyes
were swollen, and he felt a burning sensation continuously.
Doctor: Please open your eyes, I will use this small light to examine your eyes.
Patient: I have been reading on the computer for long hours Doctor because I have a project
due for submission on the 31st•
Doctor: Oooh, so you were reading on your computer for a very long time? [ Sarcastically]/ can
see now.
Patient: Yes Doctor
Doctor: You are suffering from asthenopia or simply eye strain.
Patient: I have been reading for a long time then afterwards I drove for 40 km ( Bishoftu) to
where I am staying. When I reached home, my eyes stated burning me inside out. I could not
sleep at all.
Doctor: Yes. That condition is called asthenopia or eyestrain. It is a common condition that
occurs when your eyes get tired from intense use especially when you read or drive for long
distances. Reading during the day can be fine but it must be with some breaks in between.
Patient: Ok Doctor
Doctor: I will test your eyes and prescribe reading glasses for you.

Patient: Are the reading glasses not too expensive Doctor? I thought I would be given an eye
operation.
Doctor: You do not need to pay anything. Your medical aid can cover for that. After taking the
medication, the pain will subside, and you do not need an operation at all.
Patient: That is the good thing about having a medical aid Doctor, but I need the operation.
It is burning me deep and deep.
Doctor: Please look inside the screen and read the letters for me please. I will rest you using
the Snellen test. The Snellen test uses a chart of letters or symbols. You will identify the letters
while I check here. You will tell me what you see.
Patient: E, W, C, F, P
Doctor: The testing is now complete. I will prescribe reading glasses +4 lenses. Your eyes were
a bit weak. The pain must subside first and you will be discharged soon.
Patient: I am not satisfied with your decision but let me follow what you are telling me.
