E-Government portal and data privacy
The Namibian Government has recently ex panded its e-Government services by launching
an online portal where citizens can apply for nation al documents such as ID cards, driver's
lece nses and social grants. Th e portal was developed by a local IT com pany in partnership
with a foreign soft wa re provider.
During the first year of operation, concerns were raised that citizens' perso nal information,
including national ID numbers, addresses, and financial details were stored on servers
located outside Nam ibia. Some IT st aff also discovered that the system had weak password
protection, making it vulnerable to hacking.
A Namibian civil society group argued that this violated citizens' right to privacy and national
data sovereignty. Meanwhile, the IT company defended its decision, saying that using
foregn servers reduced costs and improved efficiency.
