The Politeness Theory is a theory that appeared within the framework of Pragmatics research
in Linguistics. According to this theory, the interlocutors use particular strategies to achieve
successful communication. These strategies enable to create maximally comfortable
environment for communication. According to Brown and Levinson (1987) politeness can be
defined as "showing awareness and consideration of another person's face " (pp. 311-312).
Linguistic politeness can be defined as the ways in which language is employed in interactions
to show consideration for the feelings and desires of one's interlocutors to create and uphold
interpersonal relationships and to comply with the rules for what society or one's culture
considers appropriate behaviour. On the other hand, the major purpose of Politeness
Principle (PP) according to Leech is to establish and maintain feelings of comity within social

group. In line with Geofrey Leech's Politeness Principles, analyse the conversation between a
medical doctor and a patient below.
The patient is a middle-aged woman named Emvula Kaarina who was brought to the
Katutura Hospital in Windhoek because she had a miscarriage. She was first examined by
an elderly nurse and then by a young medical doctor. Evaluate the context of the following
medical interaction and write a descriptive essay following Leech's Politeness Principle.
Nurse: Doctor, Doctor there is an inpatient bleeding over there in one of the rooms! She is
very noisy.
Doctor: Good morning, Madam! What has happened? What is the main problem?
Patient: I do not know what happened my son. I am 3 months pregnant (gasping for fresh
air.)
Doctor: Ok please lay on the bed while I am examining you.
Patient: (Patient laying on the bed)
Doctor: Did you take any medication recently?
Patient: Yes, Doctor I swallowed some of these pills yesterday (patient showing brown pills.)
Doctor: I am going to do SONA procedure and a pregnancy test on you.
Patient: Ok Doctor.
Doctor: Your result shows that you have had a miscarriage according to the SONA results.
Patient: My child, my child, (patient crying) What can I do now Doctor?
Doctor: You will be fine. I am now going to take you to the theatre to remove the remains
from the womb.
Patient: Thank you Doctor but I did not bring any extra clothes to change
Doctor: We will give you extra clothes from the hospital. After evaluating your miscarriage
condition, I will give you the following treatment plan.
Doctor: (Writing a treatment and prescription). This tablet that I am giving you will help to
clean your reproductive system. Can you please lay on the bed so that I can insert the pill
inside your vaginal canal? I will admit you here in the hospital for 24 hours. Then tomorrow
morning I can come to check on you.
Patient: Thank you Doctor.
The next day in the morning ....
Doctor: Good morning to you. How are you feeling now?

Patient: I feel much worst Doctor. It has been very painful. I have been discharging some
blood, but it seems to have stopped now. I think the pill you inserted in my vagina worked
to clean my system but really painful.
Doctor: Do you feel any dizziness now?
Patient: Yes, Doctor !. I also feel extremely weak and delusional.
Doctor: I am going to discharge you now. I will give you some antibiotics and painkillers. You
can collect them from the pharmacy. If you feel any pain when you get home, please come
back immediately, you do not have to stand in the queue. You must just let the nurse know
that you had a miscarriage last week.
Patient: No! No! No! You cannot discharge me today ! In the name of your God let me stay
for one more day please. Doctor, I need more medication and care.
Doctor: We do not have extra bed for healthy people here. As you can see, the hospital is
overcrowded. (Writing a prescription).
Nurse: Dress up Ma'am!
