QUESTION 1

To what extent are girl-children marginalised in African _oral narratives? Using the
feminist ideas on children's literature, justify your answer by referring closely to any
two oral narratives studied in this course. Give a summary of each story first. Your
answer should have an introduction, body, and conclusion. The choice of narratives is
very important in this question. Choose narratives that allow you to carry out a debate
or an argument.

With close reference to the text, analyse the role of the River and Child Development in
Chike and the River by Chinua Achebe.

With close reference to Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, analyse any five major
themes from the novel. Furthermore, discuss how each of these themes can be
critically re-examined and related to the concerns and characteristics of post-colonial
children's literature in Africa.

What, in your opinion, is a fantasy book? Identify and discuss the characteristics of
fantasy, its value for children, and its features. Use of examples from any of the two
fantasies learned in your course: Charlotte's Web by E.B. White or Charlie and the
Chocolate Factory by R. Dahl.
